BOULDER CITY, Nevada – The National Park Service is celebrating National Park Week April 21-29 to encourage everyone to find their own connections to the more than 400 national park units that protect and preserve America’s natural and cultural history.
Lake Mead National Recreation Area has numerous events planned to help people #FindYourPark.
April 21 – Free Entrance
In celebration of National Park Week, entrance fees will be waived for the day at Lake Mead National Recreation Area and all other national parks.
April 21 – Junior Ranger Day
Lake Mead National Recreation invites families to join the park for its 12th annual Junior Ranger Day 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 21 at the Lake Mead Visitor Center. Junior Ranger Day is held annually during National Park Week to inspire the nation’s youth to enjoy, learn about and protect natural resources.
This free event will offer fun, interactive stations with kids’ activities that focus on nature and water safety. Rangers will share information about career opportunities within the park service, and there will be K-9 demonstrations, as well.
Smokey Bear, Mojave Max and Coastie, the talking robot boat, will be on hand to add to the fun. When kids complete their activities, they will be sworn in as Junior Rangers and receive a Junior Ranger badge and certificate. In addition, all fourth graders will receive an Every Kid in a Park pass that grants them and three guests free admission to more than 2,000 federal public lands.
Western National Parks Association, Lake Mead’s nonprofit education partner, will offer discounts all day in the park store located inside the visitor center.
April 21 – Volunteer Day
Volunteering is an American tradition that has made immeasurable contributions to communities, organizations and individuals. Volunteers-In-Parks (VIPs) are Very Important People. Their contributions of time and energy help to protect the natural and cultural areas entrusted to the National Park Service.
Each year, thousands of individuals volunteer their time and talents at Lake Mead National Recreation Area. Opportunities are available for highly skilled professionals and for beginners with little or no experience. To become a volunteer and learn about available opportunities, stop by the Volunteer in Parks booth at Junior Ranger Day or email LAKE_Volunteer_Coordinator@nps.gov.
April 22 – Earth Day
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the National Trails System and the Wild & Scenic Rivers acts. The National Park Service is inviting visitors to #FindYourWay this Earth Day by exploring America’s national scenic, recreational and historic trails and rivers.
Traveling a National Recreation Trail provides a connection with adventure, history, heritage, community and nature. Lake Mead is home to three: the Historic Railroad Trail, the River Mountains Loop Trail and the Black Canyon Water Trail.
“Though Lake Mead is a short distance from Las Vegas, it can feel like a world apart. Nowhere is this more apparent than on a trail,” said Lake Mead National Recreation Area Superintendent Lizette Richardson. “Trails provide opportunities for fresh air, exercise, great views and discovery.
“They offer access to places of peace and quiet and inspiration. We invite you to celebrate this anniversary and with us and hope you find your own unforgettable experience on one of them.”
